General Description
At CI-Atabey, we are committed to the protection and restoration of mangroves, vital ecosystems for biodiversity and the fight against climate change. Our project, developed in the provinces of Montecristi and Puerto Plata, implements an innovative economic compensation mechanism called the “Dominican Blue Carbon Exchange,” which promotes the conservation and restoration of mangroves through the issuance and commercialization of blue carbon credits.
This project is financially supported by the UK Blue Planet Fund through ORRAA (Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance), an initiative that drives innovative solutions to build resilience in vulnerable coastal communities and mitigate climate-related risks.

Why mangroves?
Mangroves are highly productive ecosystems that capture and store large amounts of carbon, significantly contributing to climate change mitigation. Additionally, they act as natural barriers against extreme weather events, protecting coastal communities and promoting biodiversity.
However, these ecosystems face multiple threats, such as deforestation, pollution, and the effects of climate change. Our project seeks to reverse this situation and highlight the strategic value of mangroves for sustainable development.
Innovation and Key Actions
The project introduces an innovative approach with the following main components:
- Creation of the Blue Carbon Exchange: Development of a transparent management system aligned with international standards, such as the High-Quality Blue Carbon (HQBC) Principles.
- Quantification and Monitoring of Blue Carbon: Implementation of standardized protocols to measure carbon stored in mangroves and their ecological health.
- Community Participation: Training and raising awareness among local communities, farmers, and fishers for the sustainable management of mangroves.
- Strengthening Partnerships: Collaboration with public and private sectors and local organizations to ensure the project’s sustainability.
Expected Impact
Through this project, we aim to generate environmental, social, and economic benefits:
- Climate Change Mitigation: Through carbon capture and storage.
- Protection of Coastal Communities: Mangroves act as natural shields against storms and hurricanes.
- Community Empowerment: Encouraging active participation of local communities in managing these valuable ecosystems.
- Economic Incentives: The sale of blue carbon credits will generate income to support long-term conservation efforts.
With the Dominican Blue Carbon Exchange, CI-Atabey reinforces its commitment to sustainability and the protection of natural resources. We invite companies, organizations, and individuals interested in contributing to mangrove conservation to join this initiative. Thanks to the support of the UK Blue Planet Fund and ORRAA, we are building a more resilient and sustainable future for the coastal communities of the Dominican Republic.
